課程概述

This course is designed to help students develop communicative proficiency in English. The four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing are integrated by means of topics, situations, functional expressions and structures which are analyzed and personalized.

課程目標
By the end of the course, students should detect an improvement in their performance in the key study skills:

Their ability to deal with unfamiliar vocabulary, to survey, read, and take notes from an academic text should be enhanced.
Their ability to speak confidently and communicate their ideas in front of an audience peers.
Students should feel more familiar with the basic requirements for writing a competent English academic essay.
Students should have developed strategies for more effective note-taking in lectures, and for making their own brief oral presentations.
Students should also have built a strong foundation in reading critically and writing fluently for more advanced literature study.
課程要求
Class Attendance
Attendance is mandatory. Due to the performative nature of the course, you are expected to be an active member of the class--this is possible only when you are present. Regular attendance will enhance your progress in the course and will positively affect your final grade. Students with more than three unexcused absences or five tardinesses may not receive a grade for the course.

Class participation
The bottom line for this portion of the grade will be the percentage of days that the student has attended class. On the basis of this percentage, the grade will then vary depending on how well the student has prepared for class and how much the student has contributed to class discussions and exercises (being an active student, using English at all times in the class, positive participation in group activities).

Exams
There will be one midterm and one final exam. No make-up exams will be given unless the instructor is notified in advance.

Homework
Any late homework will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.

MyET (My English Tutor)
"My ET" is an online computer program/a mobile App that aims to help students learn English through speaking practice. Before presenting the TED talk at the end of the semester, students are required to obtain a passing score of an average of 75 from appointed lesson units in MyET.

Teaching and Learning Methods
The teaching of this course is guided by the conviction that to be a student at NTU is to be an autonomous, self-motivated individual, and also a member of an academic community with whom the student must interact in various roles and contexts. Teaching methods, therefore, are student-centered, task-based and collaborative. Students are guided in the classroom to 'learn through doing’, engaging in problem-solving activities in pairs, small groups and in plenary discussions. Individual learning will be reinforced in the completion of homework assignments. The role of the instructor, therefore, is to present a new skill or language-focus, to stage and grade activities effectively, to facilitate and monitor performance of tasks in class.

Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is honored in this course. That is, students need to present, if any, their own, original, researched works and cite all outside sources. Much of the value of this class will be in learning to select your own topics and present them in either writing or speaking format. Any ideas which are not your original thought must have a citation for the original source. Using an idea developed by others, or quoting sentences or research from written texts without appropriate references constitutes plagiarism. And plagiarism will not be tolerated in this course. Any student that is suspected of such behaviour will receive a first-time warning; and if suspected again, a zero for the final grade of the course.
